New York State Health Community MPH Fellowship

OVERVIEW:

The CUNY-Community Partnership for Public Health (C.C.P.) is a program comprised of the three M.P.H. programs within at Brooklyn, Hunter, and Lehman Colleges. The main goal of the C.C.P. is to develop a strategy for communities and campuses to collaborate in community capacity-building processes and to prepare students to work in non-profit settings.  Through funding provided by the New York State Health Foundation, fellowships are provided to selected CUNY M.P.H.students (up to fifteen; five per borough) who receive a stipend while fulfilling their M.P.H. internship requirements at one of our community partner sites.

DESCRIPTION:

  1. Each M.P.H. program currently has a Faculty Coordinator working with the partner Community-Based Organizations within their respective boroughs.
  2. There are a variety of organizational capacity-building services that will be provided (e.g., staff and board development, fiscal management, program planning and evaluation, and others) based on an assessment of each C.B.O. selected. 
  3. In addition, the M.P.H. practicum students will work with an assigned C.B.O. and respective faculty coordinator to assist in the implementation of a Capacity Action Plan developed for each CBO.  The selected student will receive a stipend of $1,000, as well as, information/material to complete a Capstone Project.

FELLOWSHIP ELIGIBILITY:

To be considered for the fellowship, applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Be a graduate student in a CUNY MPH program and meet the practicum requirements of your school
  • Have a G.P.A. of 3.5 or higher at the time of application
  • Demonstrate an interest in health equity initiatives and to working with diverse populations
  • Demonstrate a desire and interest in working within a non-profit, community-based setting
  • Work well independently and in a semi-structured setting
  • Be willing to travel to assigned C.B.O. site and related activities in the community
  • Be willing to share experiences and lessons learned with other students and our community partners
  • Be proficient in Microsoft Office programs (Word, Power Point, Excel) 
  • For some sites, additional criteria may be required (e.g., bilingual, experience with statistical software, etc.)

PARTICIPATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must fulfill the practicum requirements for their school (e.g., hours per semester)
  • Ability to integrate field experience with classroom curricula
  • Show a commitment to the values of building a partnership in which ideas/resources are mutually exchanged between academia and community-service settings 
  • Attend scheduled CCP Fellow Seminars 
  • Must develop a final deliverable (e.g., paper, poster) that culminates field experience as a Fellow and present it at  the CUNY-Community Partnership Symposium

WHAT FELLOWS RECEIVE:

  • Internship placement that matches fellow's interest and the C.B.O.'s needs
  • Weekly supervision from designated Site Advisor at the CBO
  • $1,000 stipend for the academic year
  • Forge strong academic and professional relationships with faculty and community partners
  • Support to participate in a conference within the tri-state area
