The CUNY Institute for Health Equity consists of three core areas:
(1) Research Core
(2) Community Capacity-Building Core
(3) Knowledge Transfer Core
Together the three cores work to achieve the Institute's mission interfacing to produce synergy across the three areas. The purpose of this work is to contribute to strategies that reduce health inequities within New York City.
RESEARCH CORE GOALS:
- To serve as the CUNY and New York City locus of health equity research that informs policy and program development for achieving equity.
- To serve as a repository of public data sets that informs and advances the study of the social determinants of health.
- To provide research support (study design, data analyses, etc.) to CUNY faculty, students, and community.
- To train the next generation of researchers who are equipped to conduct studies of social determinants of health and related issues.
COMMUNITY CAPACITY-BUILDING CORE GOALS:
- To establish and maintain campus/community public health partnerships, based on the principles of equity and mutually respectful and beneficial working relations for the purpose of improving community health and achieving health equity.
- To strengthen the capacity of New York City's non -profit/Community-Based Organizations (CBOs) sector to better serve their populations and improve the health and well-being of communities across the City.
KNOWLEDGE TRANSFER CORE GOALS:
- To serve as the primary communications vehicle for the dissemination of research knowledge and lessons learned from the work of the Research Core and Community Capacity-Building Core.
- To make information and data on health equity accessible to diverse audiences through a variety of methods and materials.
- To translate health equity research and theory for application (i.e., policy and program development), by a wide sector of audiences - practitioners, students, community organizations, and decision makers.
- To develop and conduct efficacious training and learning opportunities for the constituencies served by the Institute, as well as, others concerned with health equity.
